Hello?

March 23rd, 2007 / posted by Jake

I almost broke my truck’s windows with a rock.

Yup.  Let me set the setting. It was 7:45pm on a Saturday night.  Tyler, Lindsey and me had just attended a baptism and we walked through the parking lot to my truck.  Lindsey ran back inside to talk to some people and I buckled Tyler into his car-seat.  It took a couple minutes because he was grumpy and did not want to be back in the car.  To calm him down I gave him my keys, closed the door and walked around to the driver door.  En-Route a familiar noise sounded-”Beep Beep.”  Tyler managed to press the remote-lock on my remote, locking us out and him in.

Just like in the movies, I immediately ran to his door and tried talking to him through the window, explaining to him that to unlock the door you simply press the button again.  He just sat in his car-seat with the keys in his hand smiling.  It reminded me of the ‘Pirates of the Caribean’ ride at Disneyland, where the pirates were trying to trick the dog with the keys in its mouth to come closer…. AAA was dispatched and so we waited and Tyler grew impatient.  By now, 15 minutes had lapsed and it was pretty dark outside, and that much darker inside the truck.  Tyler was crying and trying to get out his carseat;  He didn’t like this ‘game’ where he sits in the seat and we all stand outside looking in.  20 minutes came…. 30 minutes….. FINALLY AAA arrived and within minutes unlocked the door.  We got Tyler out and by then he couldn’t cry anymore.  His shirt was as wet as a washcloth.  We felt soooo bad.  It did cross our minds to break the window and we definitely would have, had it been during the day and./or hot outside.

For months now, Tyler has always been interested in our cellphones.  Anytime he’d have any object in his hands, we’d say “Hello?!” and he’d put that object to his ear and start babbling, just as he had seen Mommy and Daddy doing.  So just last week we did it and instead of babble he actually said, “ellllo?” !  I think that just might count as his first word.   I’m trying to figure out if I’m proud or not;  I guess it could be worse;  He could be saying, “myspace”, “email” or “jay-z”.  Actually, I’d love it if he could say “Jay-Z”.
